For the second year ASTAL is joining with the New England Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators to present ENCORE 2008! at Rhode Island College. The program will feature workshops from
recent regional SCBWI Spring Conferences. We hope you will join us for this great opportunity to hone your storytelling and marketing skills. The registration fee of $50 includes a buffet lunch.
We will have four workshops, and you'll be able to attend all of them:
- Act 1: Punch Up Your Plotting
(one hour) J. L. Bell - Book editor and author of nonfiction and fiction for kids Principles and tools for analyzing your plot, getting around plot roadblocks, and presenting your
plot in the most exciting way.
- Act 2: Characters That Leap Off the Page
(one hour) Mark Peter Hughes - Author of highly acclaimed I AM THE WALLPAPER and LEMONADE MOUTH
Secrets to eliminating wooden characters and creating great stories which come alive with realistic, interesting characters.
- Act 3: Writing an Excellent Query Letter
(one hour) Padma Venkatraman - Author of highly acclaimed CLIMBING THE STAIRS and winner of SCBWI's Magazine Merit Award
Skills required by those who wish to market their work to agents or directly to editors.
- Act 4: Pitch and Package
(two hours) Sarah Shumway - Editor at Dutton Children's Books Insider information on effective ways to pitch and package your submissions to best represent the
work and convince an editor the project will succeed in the marketplace.
